ACBC Training Process
The Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) certification equips people to utilize the Scriptures to address problems people face. The biblically-grounded ACBC process is made up of three phases: learning, exams and evaluations, and supervision.
ACBC comes alongside individuals to train and certify that they are faithfully ministering the Word of God in the counseling room. ACBC offers a comprehensive biblical counseling certification program that is rigorous, but attainable. To learn more about the three phases of the certification process, click here.

FAQs About Becoming a Counselor
ACBC exists to equip you to minister the Bible faithfully to those all around you who are in need of God’s truth. Our biblically grounded certification process is made up of three phases: learning, exams and evaluations, and supervision. To learn more about each step, read about each phase of training in the subsequent dropdowns.
Once certified, biblical counselors are required to complete continuing education requirements in order to remain certified and in good standing with ACBC.
Phase 1 of ACBC certification is considered the "Learning" stage of the process. It involves three parts:
Fundamentals Course*: Engage with 30 hours of biblical counseling training. The Fundamentals Training Course is a lecture course on the basics of biblical counseling. Taking this course gives an introduction to the essential elements of biblical counseling.
Observation: Observe an ACBC counselor for 10 hours—in person or remotely.
Reading: Read 1,000 pages from ACBC-approved counseling and theology book.
* Church at The Mill currently offers two paths for the ACBC Fundamentals Course.
- Three-weekend Counseling & Discipleship Training (CDT) conference. Each weekend consists of 10 hours of lectures over the course of Friday evening and Saturday. Weekend sessions occur one weekend per month over the course of three months.

Phase 2 of ACBC certification is the "Exams & Evaluations" stage of the process. It involves two parts:
Exams: Candidates answer 44 essay-style questions on theology and counseling. They complete these open-book tests at their own pace.
Evaluations: Candidates submit evaluations from those in their lives who understand their character.
Phase 3 of ACBC certification is the "Supervision" stage of the process.
In this stage of the certification process, candidates train under an ACBC Fellow who mentors and supervises them through 50 sessions of counseling.
Two-year average completion, Four-year deadline for Phases 1 and 2 , Two-year deadline for Phase 3.
We are thrilled to have people pursue certification who have prior education and experience in counseling, as well as those with no prior education and experience. However, our certification standards require that each applicant must complete all three phases of the ACBC Certification process. Additionally, the Fundamentals Training Course required for ACBC certification must be completed through an ACBC Certified Training Center or other ACBC Certified Training source.
